‘Gone Girl’ Ending Rewritten for David Fincher’s Adaptation

Gone Girl’ Ending Rewritten for David Fincher’s Adaptation

Flynn herself wrote an entirely new final act for the screenplay

The polarizing ending of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling thriller “Gone Girl” has been completely reworked for David Fincher’s screen adaptation. In fact, Flynn herself wrote an entirely new final act for the screenplay.

Flynn revealed the twist in this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, which features a cover, shot by Fincher himself, depicting Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike lying in a morgue.

“Ben was so shocked by it,” Flynn told the mag about the screenplay. “He would say, ‘This is a whole new third act! She literally threw that third act out and started from scratch.’”

The former EW writer said she didn’t shy away from killing her darlings.

“There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I’d spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its 8 million Lego pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie,” she said.

The impetus behind the major amendment to the story is unclear, but Fincher did tell EW that he “may have been too beholden to the source material” of Stieg Larsson’s novel “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” when bringing it to the bigscreen in 2011.

“Gone Girl” hits theaters on Oct. 3.

* This was my initial post on the possibility of seeing Emily's tits on-screen. Later contacted the EP (Executive Producer) for his opinion:

Roger: What is your take on models being cast in high profile flicks? I was surprised when it was announced Emily Ratajkowski will play Affleck's mistress in Gone Girl. Figured the only reason she was hired over more credible actress is because she has no problem in showing her breasts without pesky nudity clause attached.

EP: I'm not so sure about that. I'm sure a lot of actresses would have taken that role and not made a big deal out of the nudity clause, etc. You'd be surprised how more and more, fewer actresses are hung up on that stuff these days. I know Emily was an actress first, though not that successful. It's more possible that she was cast for the fact that she's got a high profile now than it is that she would easily shed her clothes. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that - even though she seems to drop her top all the time - if Emily didn't start making it more difficult to get her naked as she will want to NOT be the girl who's only known for that. This happens a lot. Actresses who become well known for being comfortable in that arena start making it MUCH more difficult to do nudity because they are sick of the image being associated with them.
