Coast model a homebird at heart

The 18-year-old said she had thought about competing in Sydney but would 'rather be at home'.

"I moved away about two weeks ago to pursue a modelling career down here," she said.

"There's no place like home though."

Cannon, who was recently announced as the face of Sandi, the latest collection in the White Sands Swimwear label, said she thought the Miss Universe competition would be an 'incredible opportunity'.

"It hasn't been something I have always wanted to do but seeing the success that Jesinta (Campbell) and Jennifer (Hawkins) have got from the competition has been good encouragement," she said.

"I love representing the Aussie girl this comp is the ultimate way to do that.

"The opportunities that come up for the winner and even the exposure of being the in the preliminaries is really good.

"It's great that it's not just about look but it's the personality as well. It's about the complete package."

This weekend more than 35 ladies will be judged in evening wear and swimwear by judges including current Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell, FTV Oceana CEO Aaron O'Donnell and fashion stylist Rebecca Williams.

The preliminary final will be held at Komune, Coolangatta on Saturday.

The winners will head to Sydney in June for the national final.

A second preliminary final will be held on the Coast at Sanctuary Cove in March.

Exclusive Interview Samantha Cannon her jewellery line and modelling career with Vivien's Model Management

Where were you born Samantha?

I was born on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Editorials or covers that you have done?

I have done editorials for Elle India, Verve India, Marie Claire India also some editorials for a Japanese magazine called Glitter. Swimwear campaigns for Surfing Life and editorials for several surfing magazines here in Australia.

Is there any type of shoot that you refuse to do, for example nudes?

Vivien's have always been great in looking out for me and my interests. My mother was always very cautious with the shoots and it can be daunting when you first start out. I went for a job for Glitter magazine in Japan, and Mum had to drop off to a hotel for the job. When I arrived the staff were still in their pajamas, they had slept in. This made my Mum nervous leaving me there on my own, but it all turned out well, that is part of the industry I suppose to a certain extent.
